HOTT Battle Report 2: VSF/Steam Punk

Another coffee (thanks Tracey!) and some chicken flavoured chips later and I was ready for another game.

This time I swapped out the hero for some flyers (impressed by the performance of Nick's in the last game), taking pretty much the '100 Years War' list: 6 x shooters (bow), 2 x knights (men-at-arms), 2 x blade (billmen... stiffened by dismounted knights, which apparently happened a lot while on campaign - the nights were long and cold), and 2 x flyers (Irish light horse and psiloi).

And as I rolled for the defender again, I took up a nice defensive position in the centre of the board.

Nick changed up as well, taking: 4 x shooters, 1 x airboat, 1 x behemoth, 3 x flyers, 1 x knight (only 23 points!).

Setting up most of his force opposite mine in the centre.

But also doing tricksey things with some flanking elements on my far left.

After photos were completed we started the game.

On my left flank, Nick began his flanking maneuvers with the flyers.

While beginning the advance in the centre.

I moved up the Geiger Moths to face the airboat.

And advanced the centre.

I think Nick must have rolled poorly for PIPs as the next shots I have are of my growing and enthusiastic application of my flyer's distance. Having feinted on the left flank I shot one of the flyers behind Nick's centre.

And continued to taunt the airboat.

Nick took the bait in the centre and we went head to head, flyer to flyer, which resulted in a recoil.

And the airboat captain took the bait on the flank.

But I recoiled out of danger and in my next turn rolled away from the combat and into Nick's centre, to start turning his line, or at least disrupting it - which resulted in a drawn combat.

While at the same time feinting away over to Nick's right flank to ZOC his knights.

Nick countered my threat in the centre with the airboat and I would humbly suggest that, because I have no further pictures of that Geiger Moth, it met its end in the combat.

Having caught the flying bug I spotted an opportunity to take one of Nick's flyers out and flew across the board to contact his flyer in the rear... hoping to recoil it into its fellow flyer.

But I ran out of steam and lost another flyer... while in the centre things were getting serious as Nick moved up his army.

And the centre was poised for combat

Nick flanked my line on the left...

... and started rolling it up.

I rushed my knights in to help.

Then shooting took out the airboat - huz-*****-zar!

We reformed lines.

I pressed forward on my right, having already recoiled his flyer unit.

My firing line continued to do damage in Nick's line.

While Nick went for my knights and forced a recoil...

... and ended their knightly occurrences.

Continued and focused firing from my line resulted in another one of Nick's flyers and another shooter going down.

Meanwhile Nick pushed forward on my left flank with the behemoth, to engage the knights and...

... it went down, taking my tally to 11 points with one more element to go.

Nick's flyers came in for the kill...

... while I straightened the firing line on my right.

The knights saw off the flyers.

And the firing line scored the final points by taking out another of Nick's shooters.

Another close game 13-8 with the shooters performing particularly well and with Nick's army slightly undermanned.

While HOTT may not have the nuances of 'character' that skirmish rules and RPGs provide,  it's still a fun fantasy game after all this time.

I love it's tongue-in-cheek approach which is limited only by players' imaginations... now where did I put those mythical Egyptians?

PS: I wonder if trying HOTT with DBA 3.0 movement and range factors, wouldn't make it even better.

HOTT Battle Report: VSF/Steam Punk

Had a couple of games of HOTT over at Nick's on the weekend using my recently resurrected VSF and Nick's VSF with some elements done by Robin - including a giant scratch built Airboat and flyers - Nice!

For the first game I took 1 x Hero, 2 x Knight, 2 x Blade, 6 x shooters

Which went up against Nicks' 1 x Airboat, 1 x Behmoth, 1 x Magician, 2 x flyers, 4 x shooters.

Nick rolled as the aggressor and my deployment was nothing to write home about.

With four patches of difficult going I opted for two main brigades. One on my centre right.

And one on my left flank.

Facing Nick's shooters on my right flank.

His mechanical monstrosities in the centre and the flyers on my left flank.

Impressive looking scratch built airboat

Excellent scratch built behemoth and magician (wyrding canon)

Awesome scratch built flyers.

Nick seemed particularly impressed to be fielding the airboat and steam tank...

On to the first game.

Stuff happened and I can't remember who went first but the first significant event was the Hero doing something heroic and charging off towards the advancing airboat and steam tank, ZOCing the boat.

Then Nick's flyers zipped around the back of my line.

Before a suitably epic and heroic battle broke out between the hero, the airboat, and the steam tank.

Which went well for my hero but not so great for the boat.

Emboldened, I methodically moved through the rough ground with my main force.

And sent a knight forward to support my hero.

But alas the knights didn't reach the hero in time and he was heroically flanked by the flyers and stomped by the steam tank.

And then the knights went the same way and things weren't looking too good.

Completely flanked I turned some of the firing line towards the flyers and started shooting, immediately taking one out.

But Nick began bringing up his firing line and magician as I tried to get my other brigade out of the rough ground and into the fight, even forming a column to do so - which at least looked good but didn't get far before the game ended.

Then another of Nick's flyers went down and things weren't looking too bad again.

Then the behemoth fell to the firing line as well (no photo) and the reformed firing lines and magician began to swaps shots.

Until the combined fire of three elements took out one of Nick's shooters with a suitably stoic roll of 1, which took my score to 12 points and gave me the game.

Was a cool game but a bit slow moving compared to DBA 3.0, my other brigade didn't have a chance to regroup, but still fun - thanks Nick!.
